How to play
emoji_eventsGoal
Surround more of the board than your opponent. Each side counts the points its stones stand on plus the empty points only it encloses, and White adds 7.5 points of komi for moving second.
sports_esportsHow to Play
- Black goes first, then the players take turns placing one stone on any empty intersection
- Stones never move once placed, but a stone or group with no empty point beside it is captured and lifted off
- Tap Pass when there is nothing left worth playing; two passes in a row end the game
- Keyboard: arrows move the cursor, Enter places a stone, P passes, Z undoes
gavelRules
- A stone's liberties are the empty points directly beside it; stones of one colour that touch share theirs
- You may not play a stone that would have no liberties, unless it captures first
- Ko: after taking a single stone that could take you straight back, the retake must wait one move — the board marks the point
- Scoring is by area: your stones plus the empty points only you enclose
- Dead stones are not negotiated: capture them before you pass, or they count for their owner
lightbulbTips
- Corners first, then sides, then the middle — a corner needs the fewest stones to hold
- A group needs two separate eyes to live; one big eye can be filled and taken
- Do not chase a stone that will not die — every move spent on it is a move not spent on territory
- Count liberties before a fight: the group with more of them wins the race
- Passing is not losing — when every move would only cost you a point, pass
infoGame Over
The game ends when both players pass in turn. The board is then counted as it stands: each side scores the points its stones stand on and the empty points it alone surrounds, and White adds 7.5 points of komi. The higher total wins, and the half point means there is never a tie.
